Weekly vs. Bi-Weekly Lawn Mowing in Florida: Which Is Right for You?

The biggest factor in this decision is not your preference — it is your grass type and the season. Florida lawns do not behave like lawns in the Midwest or Northeast. Here is an honest breakdown to help you choose.

The 1/3 Rule — Why It Matters for Florida Lawns

The universal rule for healthy mowing: never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade height in a single mow. Cutting more than that stresses the plant, depletes energy reserves, and leaves the lawn vulnerable to heat, pests, and disease.

In St. Pete's climate, St. Augustine grass can grow 2–3 inches per week during the growing season (April–October). If you are mowing at 4 inches (correct height), it can reach 6–7 inches in two weeks. Cutting it back to 4 inches at that point means cutting nearly half the blade — well past the 1/3 rule. That is why weekly service is right for most St. Pete yards during growing season.

When Bi-Weekly Makes Sense

• Winter months (December–February): St. Augustine slows significantly. Bi-weekly service is often appropriate and will not violate the 1/3 rule.
• Zoysia grass: Zoysia grows more slowly than St. Augustine or Bermuda. Bi-weekly service is often adequate even in the growing season.
• Heavily shaded yards: Grass in full or deep shade grows much more slowly. A shaded St. Augustine lawn may do fine on bi-weekly service while a sunny lawn next door needs weekly.

The Problem With Bi-Weekly in Summer

St. Pete's peak growing season (May–September) is when bi-weekly service causes the most problems. When the crew arrives after 14 days, the grass has often grown 4–6 inches and needs to be cut back to 3.5–4 inches — removing nearly half or more of the blade. The lawn looks scalped after the visit, yellows in the days following, and the stress compounds over time. The grass thins, weeds move in, and recovery costs more in the long run than just getting weekly service from the start.
