How to Tell If Your St. Pete Lawn Needs More Water

St. Pete lawns send clear signals when they're thirsty — or drowning. Here's how to read them.

Knowing when to water — and when not to — is one of the most important skills for maintaining a healthy St. Pete lawn. Both underwatering and overwatering cause problems, and the signs can look similar. Here is how to read what your grass is actually telling you.

Signs Your Lawn Is Underwatered

  • Blades folding lengthwise: St. Augustine grass rolls its blades into a tube shape when water-stressed. Walk across the lawn — if footprints remain visible and do not spring back, the grass is thirsty.
  • Blue-gray color: Before turning yellow or brown, drought-stressed grass develops a blue-gray tint. This usually appears in the sunniest, most exposed areas first.
  • Dry, powdery soil: If you cannot push a screwdriver 6 inches into the soil without significant resistance, the soil is dry. During spring dry season (March–May), St. Pete's sandy soils drain fast.
  • Yellowing that recovers after watering: If a yellow area greens back up within 2–3 days of a good watering, drought stress was the cause.

Signs Your Lawn Is Overwatered

  • Spongy, soggy feel underfoot: The turf feels soft and squishes when you walk on it. Consistently wet soil means the lawn is not draining properly and is getting too much water.
  • Dollar weed spreading: Dollar weed (pennywort) thrives in over-irrigated soil. If you see it spreading, especially in low spots or along irrigation zones, you are likely watering too much.
  • Mushrooms or fungal patches: Consistently wet soil promotes fungal growth. Mushrooms, or gray/brown patches that spread in a ring pattern, can indicate overwatering and fungal disease.
  • Algae on soil surface: Dark green or black algae growing on bare soil or thin areas means the area stays wet too long after watering.

How Much Water Does St. Pete Grass Need?

St. Augustine grass needs approximately 3/4 inch of water per week during the growing season. This should come from a combination of rainfall and irrigation. During rainy season (June–September), natural rainfall almost always exceeds this. The best irrigation strategy: water deeply and infrequently. One 3/4-inch session produces better root depth than seven 1/10-inch daily sessions. Deep roots are more drought-resistant.

The Screwdriver Test

Before running your irrigation, push a standard screwdriver 6 inches into the soil. If it goes in easily, the soil is moist and does not need water. If it is hard to push in, the soil is dry and watering is warranted. Do this in multiple spots — sandy St. Pete soils vary in moisture across the yard.

Run Your Irrigation Smart

Florida law requires rain sensors on irrigation systems. If yours does not have one, install one — it is required by law and will prevent the most common overwatering mistakes. Smart controllers that adjust to local weather are even better and often pay for themselves in reduced water bills within a season.
