St. Petersburg's warm, humid climate is ideal for warm-season grasses. Knowing which type you have helps you understand your mowing schedule, watering needs, and what to expect from your lawn throughout the year.
St. Augustine Grass — The St. Pete Standard
Most common grass in St. Pete residential yards. If you have a lush, medium-to-dark green lawn with wide, flat blades, you almost certainly have St. Augustine.
Mowing height: 3.5–4 inches. Cutting it shorter stresses the grass and invites weeds.
Growth rate: Fast during St. Pete's warm season (March–October). Weekly mowing is the right call for this period. St. Augustine spreads via stolons (above-ground runners) and fills in quickly when properly maintained.
Bermuda Grass — Dense, Fast-Growing, Drought-Tolerant
Bermuda is less common in residential yards but popular in lawns that get full sun all day. It's a fine-bladed, dense grass that grows aggressively and spreads both above and below ground.
Mowing height: 1.5–2.5 inches — significantly shorter than St. Augustine.
Growth rate: Very fast in summer. Some Bermuda lawns in St. Pete may need cutting more than once per week during peak growing season. At minimum, weekly service is essential.
Zoysia Grass — Slower Growth, Excellent Texture
Zoysia is becoming more popular in St. Pete for its dense texture, heat tolerance, and ability to handle moderate shade. It grows more slowly than the other two, making it more manageable.
Mowing height: 1–2.5 inches, depending on the variety.
Growth rate: Moderate. Bi-weekly may be sufficient for some Zoysia lawns during cooler months, but weekly is still better in the peak growing season to prevent thatch accumulation.
How to Tell What You Have
The simplest way to tell:
- Wide, flat blades, medium green: Probably St. Augustine
- Very fine, dense, light green blades: Probably Bermuda
- Fine blades, dense carpet texture, slow growth: Probably Zoysia
